It reminded me of movies like License to Drive, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and Grosse Point Blank. I thought this was a better version of an homage to the 1980s than the movie, Hot Tub Time Machine. From the looks to the music, I loved hearing and seeing the 80s here. Producer-star Topher Grace, moving up a decade from That ’70s Show, plays Matt Franklin, an MIT grad working at Suncoast Video while deciding what to do with his life. In a Mercedes stolen by his pal Barry , Matt hits a Labor Day blowout filled with blow (the drug use delayed the R-rated film’s release).

Say about a coming-of-age movie set in 1988, shot in 2007 and just now released? For starters, I’d say Take Me Home Tonight has just enough heart and retro party spirit to hold the line before familiarity breeds contempt. Matt’s dad spends a few minutes trying to scare his kid straight when Matt and Barry, covered in white powder, wreck the Mercedes they’ve stolen. But then he just gives ’em a good clap on the back and lets them go back to their party.
Between 60 and 70 f-words, some of which are in song lyrics. (The n-word also pops up in a rap.) There are about 40 s-words. God’s name is misused at least 20 times, often coupled with “d‑‑n.” Milder expletives include “h‑‑‑,” “b‑‑ch” and “a‑‑.” Vulgar slang is used for male and female genitalia. Matt’s dad, a cop, does more damage to the vehicle with his baton. Then, he and his partner aggressively shove Barry and Matt to the ground.

Matt's ruse works, even when the party moves from Kyles to Tori's boss's manse in Beverly Hills, then he tells the truth because every romcom needs an obstacle. Matt's plunge into giving himself some direction and breaking out of his rut is to, of course, 'ride the ball,' a huge metal sphere whose path, of course, goes wildly awry. The film confuses at first, because it takes a while to realize that Kyle Masterson is Wendy's boyfriend - there is no reason why these two people would be together. In addition to the film's other problems, the L.A.P.D. is shown excusing the destruction of property as a kid's prank. A kinky Beverly Hills sex scenario involving Fogler is just inconceivable.

The movie really does have a classic 80's nostalgic feel to it and like I said it feels like a movie out of that time period rather than just a comedic reference to it. The script is somewhat smart and emotional and the characters are really well developed. Topher Grace is very fitting as the film's lead, Palmer looks beautiful and is equally fitting and Fogler is actually good for a change (he's still not really that funny but he gives a decent performance). Faris isn't bad as well and Pratt and Biehn (who's the perfect 80's icon touch, with nerds) give nice supporting performances.
The film does a good job of pulling off a classic 80's throwback feel and definitely accomplishes what it set out to do. If it had actually came out in that decade though it probably wouldn't have been much of a standout but it could have been a mildly loved looked over gem .
